At Zootah, conservation isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we live and breathe every day. From the animals we care for to the experiences we create for our guests, everything we do is rooted in protecting wildlife and preserving the natural world. We may be a small zoo in Logan, Utah—but we’re making a big impact, and we’re just getting started.
Helping Endangered Species Take Flight
One of the most rewarding parts of our work is supporting species that need a little extra help to survive. Take the nēnē goose, for example—Hawaii’s state bird and one of the rarest waterfowl in the world. Thanks to dedicated programs like ours, this gentle bird is making a strong comeback. By providing the right care and environment, we’ve been able to play a small but meaningful part in its recovery.
We’ve also had great success with our African gray crowned cranes. These striking birds—with their golden crowns and graceful dances—aren’t just beautiful to look at. They’re a reminder of how important wetlands are to biodiversity. With a little habitat creativity and a lot of love from our animal care team, we’ve created a space where they can thrive and help tell a powerful conservation story.
Another exciting update? Our very own blue-throated macaw, Blue, has gone off to do something really important. He’s now part of a conservation-focused pairing program designed to help this critically endangered parrot. While he and his new mate don’t have chicks just yet, they’re doing fantastically—and we’re feeling hopeful. We miss him here at the zoo, but we know he’s exactly where he needs to be. Supporting species like the blue-throated macaw is what we’re all about.
Beavers, Biodiversity, and Local Connections
Conservation doesn’t just happen across the globe—it starts right in our own backyard.
That’s why we’re so proud to work with Utah State University and the state on a special project focused on North American beavers. These amazing animals are natural engineers. Their dams help prevent erosion, slow down wildfires, support wetlands, and even help protect water supplies during drought.
At Zootah, we provide short-term care for beavers that need a safe place to heal or transition. Whether they’re injured, orphaned, or being relocated, we give them a soft landing before they return to the wild. During their stay, guests get to learn just how important beavers are—not just to Utah, but to ecosystems everywhere.
Inspiring Future Conservationists
We believe every zoo visit is a chance to spark curiosity, start conversations, and inspire action. Whether it’s a summer camp, a keeper chat, or just a quiet moment reading a sign at an exhibit, our goal is to help people connect with animals and see the bigger picture.
We want our guests—especially kids—to walk away not just entertained, but motivated to care a little more and maybe even see themselves as part of the solution.
